Pie is an underrated dessert. Today, it’s so much about the cupcake which has had a lot of growth in the past few years. Cookies are also popular as well. (There are a lot of great black owned cookie companies in our directory by the way). However, today is National Pie Day, for the humble filled dessert to get it’s chance to shine. From savory to sweet, pie is a unique vessel that offers opportunities and the potential for innovation in flavors and delivery methods. Justice of the Pies
We highlighted Justice of the Pies before Thanksgiving but they would have to be included in today’s list. They are one of the few black owned companies who have a full line of pies and will ship them across the country for you. Now, it’s gonna cost you, but we aren’t eating out as much, so take the time and treat yourself. Splurge a little bit and order a Caramel Apple Crumb Pie, or a Bourbon Pecan Pie, or try the Chocolate Bourbon Bacon Pecan Pie…look, my mouth is just watering thinking about them so hop on over and give them a try today.
Crust By Mack
Baltimore based Crust by Mack is the home and creator of the Crab Pie, which takes one of the city’s iconic crab cakes and spins it into something savory and delicious. They aren’t limited to their specialty however, as you can also catch various fruit pies at their stall or when you order ahead online.
Allen’s Pie
One of the reasons that cupcakes have become so popular is their convenient size. Allen’s Pies take the pie and shrink them down to a more convenient single serving. The filling’s look delicious and the crust so flaky. If you live in the greater New York area, you can get these little beauties delivered to you while the rest of us just drool.
Pot Pie Factory
The Pot Pie Factory maybe not be able to get to all of us but if you are in the Seattle area you can order one of their creations for pick up or delivery. From savory to sweet, they have offerings that fit every kind of taste bud.
Pietisserie
Pietisserie is a California Bay area bakery that makes a unique selection of pies such as their Violet Sweet Potato Pie. The Bay area can pick up these pies or have a slightly wider selection get delivered, but the rest of us are more limited, though we can get them delivered to our doors.
Lush Yummies Pie Company
The Lush Yummies Pie Company has a signature in their Lemon Butta Pie which has been described as a lemon meringue pie mixed with a cheesecake. But don’t sleep because this company from Detroit has more than that up their sleeve. From original size pies to their pie cups which you can order for shipping, this company is bringing the innovation to a new area. There are a lot of great things coming out of Detroit these days and Lush Yummy Pie Co is one of the great new companies bringing them life.
512 Sweet Tooth
I’m not sure if Cobbler is technically pie, but I wouldn’t sleep on the person I consider the Cobbler King of 512 Sweet Tooth. It started with the cobbler cones but grew to include cobbler tacos as well. If you’re in Houston Chef Jackson can also make your special event into a top tier affair. Check out the brunch affairs he has done and book him. Order a cake or cone kit. Just don’t miss out.
Mr. Tod’s Pies
This Shark Tank alum is known for his sweet potato pies first and foremost. But thankfully the story doesn’t end there as he now offers an array of sweets for online and local pickup at various grocery stores including some New York and New Jersey area Shoprite locations.
