The dessert has become more popular as both a new destination to live, and as a place to vacation. Phoenix has been one of the most rapidly growing cities for a while and it is also a booming tourist destination. People come to enjoy the air, enjoy the vistas, and take part in outdoor attractions. The city also has a wide variety of Black entrepreneurs working to provide great food and services, as well as build and maintain community in the area. We’ve done our best to give you some options if you plan to visit the city sometime soon, and hope that you enjoy. The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center in Phoenix, Arizona began its life as the segregated Phoenix Union Colored High School for African American in 1926. Today, it is a historic landmark dedicated to the preservation of Black History in Arizona and the American West. “The Carver” as it is affectionately known, is dedicated to artistic expression, history, the community and socio-economic advancement at every level. Be sure to schedule your visit in advance as they don’t accept walk-ins and they are open on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
CC’s on Central is a little taste of New Orleans in the middle of the desert. Get your favorite southern dishes for breakfast and lunch in their mid-town location. The menu features different and delicious breakfast sandwiches and burritos as well as Praline French Toast. Of course for lunch, you can get a classic like Red Beans and rice.
Lolo’s has multiple locations across the West so you can find a great place to get familiar comfort food. The chicken and waffles are flavorful and loved by many. For a nice and familiar meal, head into Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles.





Latha is an upscale but casual restaurant that offers contemporary Pan-African Cuisine.The restaurant highlights and allows you to discover the interconnected journey of the foodways and culture of Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Southern US. Founder Evilia Davis has cultivated an environment for fun, sharing the love of food, and a place to connect.
Grassrootz Books and Juice Bar is a community resource in the Eastlake Area of Phoenix. As the only Black Owned Bookstore in the city, they have an important place in the community. Check out their wall of classic Jet magazine covers and grab yourself a fresh pressed juice named after Black Leaders. Use it as an opportunity to even bring in books and donate them so that others can have a chance to get and read some black literature.
The Archwood Exchange, commonly known as ACRES in the area is a community center and movement to help transform historically underserved communities interested in entrepreneurship. They help by supporting entrepreneurs with the tools to become successful and gives them exposure in their marketplace. If you are looking to find some emerging brands, the Archwood Exchange is the perfect place to find something new from the Black Community.
JL Smokehouse is a barbecue spot that is bringing together the best of Southern barbecue. Combining the flavors and styles of the Carolinas, Tennessee, Texas, and Missouri to create something all their own, but still familiar, smokey and sweet. Make sure to grab some of their famous pulled pork when you visit as it’s a must to add to your plate.
Phoenix is building its own character and reputation for barbecue and that includes Sweet Magnolia’s Smokehouse. The restaurant is inviting but that doesn’t mean the food isn’t good. They take the time and effort to make great barbecue and the sides are star-worthy as well.
The Onyx Art Gallery is a great place to find contemporary art in Phoenix. The space showcases local and national artists as well as musical performances. Visit their multicultural space to get an experience in the city’s art scene.
Bear and the Honey is an awesome and loved bakery cafe in the city. They offer up dozens of nostalgic desserts, pastries and treats. You can also get sandwiches, salads and focaccia pizzas on their daily menu. Indulge yourself with class in their airy dining room when you visit Bear and the Honey.

Chic Chef Co is a gourmet luxury market in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Chef and owner Nik Fields offers a wide variety of fine gourmet foods from seasonings to olive oils and sauces. Stop into the store and find a large variety of great goods that make your meals excellent.
You want some nightlife options in Phoenix, the Womack is your answer. This historic cocktail lounge is a great place to get drinks and listen to great live music performances. Jazz, R and B, enjoy your evenings with fun music that moves the crowd in a great atmosphere.
Straw and Wool is a Black owned hat shop that calls Phoenix its home. The company, founded in February of 2020, serves to bring together people from all across the country who have moved to the city and wanted to find a place that shares their love of quality headwear. Their goal is to help build the community in Phoenix, bringing together all types of people under their love of classic hats.
