Fill Your Freezer
March is National Frozen food Month and it makes a great opportunity to spotlight some black owned brands that are making their mark in the grocery field. Frozen foods have come a long way since our youth, and some of them are trying to shed the bad rap these kinds of foods have. These brands are coming with great ingredients and cultural flavors to make things easy for you. Check them out today and request them at your local stores. If you’re looking for ice cream or desserts, check them out in our directory here.

Funky Fresh Spring Rolls are the brainchild of Milwaukee’s Trueman McGee. The goal was to create something healthy, delicious and filled with protein for his personal training clients. Now found in over half a dozen stores in multiple states, you can get these rolls as a snack for you and your family. Toss them in a little oil, air fry or bake them for your pleasure.

Myles Powell didn’t start out to make mac and cheese. In fact, his initial business was a line of fruit based barbecue sauces. Pairing them with other options his buffalo mac and cheese became a hit and Myles began to move his focus into making that a signature product. This Mac and Cheese features real high quality ingredients. Myles Comfort Foods also has Homestyle and Philly mac and cheese varieties that you can find in Mid-Atlantic and East Coast retailers.

Mama’s Biscuit is a black owned biscuit brand from Frederick, MD. These gourmet biscuits come in a variety of flavors, both sweet and savory to go with your breakfasts, dinners, or even as a snack. Every bite is wholesome and delicious and you can find them at Mariano’s, Kroger, Trager Joes and more stores across the country.

Reggio’s is a Chicago based business whose roots go back to 1972. It is known for its butter crust. In 2018, the brand was acquired by Shari Wilson, making it the first and only frozen pizza line owned by an African American woman. Reggio’s can be found at numerous retailers like Wal-Mart, Aldi, and Jewel-Osco just to name a few.

Ayo-Foods has grown up quickly since owners Perteet and Fred quit their jobs to run the company full time and fulfill their mission of bringing West African foods to the grocery aisle. This is done with frozen foods and sauces that can count Whole Foods and Sprouts among their retail locations.
